Above Ground Pool Maintenance
1. There are two sets of screws in either side if the skimmer, make sure the water level is just above the top set of screws. 2. Check the skimmer basket daily. 3. Check the pump basket monthly. If your pool is under a lot of pine trees, check weekly. To clean basket, turn pump off, put filter on closed, take out skimmer basket and put a rag in the bottom of the skimmer to keep water from getting to the pump, turn pump lid and lift. 4. Please run the pump and filter 24 hours a day. Before temperatures are constantly in the 80's you can run the filter during the day and cut it off at night. 5. Keep an eye on the pressure gauge. When the pressure goes 5 LBS. above normal, the filter is dirty and needs to be backwashed. (More information below) 6. Filter settings: (Be sure anytime you change the setting to turn off pump) - Filter - Main setting
- Waste - Use this setting to drain water level down after heavy rain.*
- Closed - Use this setting to close off filter so you can get to pump basket without getting soaked. (DO NOT TURN ON PUMP WHEN FILTER IS CLOSED)
- Recirculate - Recirculates water and bypasses the sand in the filer. There are very few uses for this setting. If there is a need for this setting, we will inform you.
- Backwash and Rinse - These two settings are used to clean out the filter. Backwash until the sight glass is clear. The rinse for 5 seconds. Then back to filter.*
**BACKWASH HOSE MUST BE UNROLLED!
Maintenance Kit
- Leaf Net - Thermometer - Brush (Used to clean debris and/or stain from pool surface) - Vacuum Head, Vaccum hose and Skim Vac (Used for cleaning bottom of pool) - Pole (Will attach to net, brush and vac head)
To VaccumAttach pole to vac head, attach hose to vac head, attach skim-vac to other end of hose, put it all in the pool and hold the skim-vac over the return eyeball where water is coming back in to the pool, until there are no more air bubbles coming out of the vac head. Then attach the vac-head in the skimmer.
When done, turn pump off, pull out vacuuming equipment, clean skimmer basket, and clean the filter.
Clearing Green or Cloudy Pool Water
1. Clean out as much debris as possible. (Brush walls, vacuum, backwash)
2. Test PH and adjust if needed. (You can skip this step if you are in a hurry)
3. Add 3 LBS. of shock per 10,000 gallons. (For BAQ. SS or Poly users, use 1 gallon shock and a double dose of algaecide per 10,000 gallons)
4. Run pump continuously for 24 hours.
5. Put the filter on recirculate.
6. Add 1 bottle of flock or Drov-N-Vac per 10,000 gallons. (Pour all over surface of pool)
7. Allow to circulate 1 hour for above ground pool and 2 hours for in-ground pool.
8. Turn pump off.
9. After 16-24 hours, most if not all the debris should be on the bottom of pool. Quickly turn pump on, and hook up vacuum.
10. Turn pump off, switch filter to waste, turn pump back on, and make sure vacuum is still connected.
11. Start vacuuming slowly. If debris starts stirring up, briefly stop until debris settles again.
12. When finished vacuuming, refill pool and redo steps 3 at 1 LB. of shock per 10,000 gallons or 1/2 gallon of shock and 1/3 bottle of algecide per 10,000 gallons for poly users to make sure there is no algae left in pool.
Pool Chemicals - Ionizer
*INITIAL ION START UP* Start Ion output at fifty, test copper daily until it reaches .3PPM, then turn output down to 20.
*YEARLY* When pool is opened each spring the following will need to be checked by a pool professional:
1. Calcium Hardness - 175-225 PPM. Keeping this correct will keep scale deposits from forming on your liner.
2. Total Alkalinity - 80-100 PPM. Keeping this correct will keep your PH from bouncing up and down.
*WEEKLY* 1. Add 1 LB. of shock for every 10,000 gallons of water. Shock must always be dissolved in a bucket of water before adding to pool or in can bleach your liner. After shocking the pool wait 8-10 hours before swimming. Shock can bleach hair and irritate eyes and skin.
2. Test PH with test kit. PH level should be 7.2-7.4.
- If PH is low add PH up or increaser. The container has directions on how much to add.
- If PH is high add PH down or decreaser. The container has directions on how much to add. (Do not allow PH to rise higher than 7.4 or staining may occur.
3. Test copper with copper test kit. Copper level should be .3PPM.
- If copper is low raise output by five. (Test after a few days)
- If copper level is high shut off Ion completely until copper reaches .3PPM.
*ALL GRANULAR CHEMICALS NEED TO BE PRE-MIXED AND DISSOLVED IN A BUCKET OF WATER BEFORE ADDING TO POOL.*
Pool Chemicals - Chlorine
*YEARLY* When pool is opened each spring, the following will need to be checked by a proffessional:
1. Calcium Hardness - 175-225 PPM. Keeping this correct will keep scale deposits from forming on your liner.
2. Total Alkalinity - 100-150 PPM. Keeping this correct will keep your PH from bouncing up and down.
3. Chlorine Stabilizer - 40-60 PPM. Keeping this correct will keep the sun from evaporating the chlorine out of the water.
*WEEKLY* 1. Add 1 LB. of shock for every 10,000 gallons of water.Shock must always be dissolved in a bucket of water before adding to pool or in can bleach your liner. After shocking the pool wait 8-10 hours before swimming. Shock can bleach hair and irritate eyes and skin.
2. If using a weekly algaecide like Poly 30 or Poly 60, a Best Pools employee will gladly tell you how much you need for your size pool.
3. Check chlorine floater or automatic chlorinator to make sure there are enough tablets.
*DAILY* 1. Test chlorine and PH with test kit.
- If PH is low add PH up or increaser. The container has directions on how much to add.
- If PH is high add PH down or decreaser. The container has directions on how much to add.
- If chlorine is low: If using a floater, it is adjustable on the bottom, just open it some. If you are using a automatic chlorinator: turn it up a notch or two.
- If chlorine is high: if using a floater adjust it to a lower setting or same thing with the dial on your automatic chlorinator.
